What has taken the rest of the world by storm is finally beginning to gain recognition in the US. While Short Messaging Service (SMS or text messaging) is used extensively by the younger generation, its benefits to business cannot be challenged.

Enhancing your e-business or e-commerce applications with SMS enables the organization to 'push' alerts and information to your mobile employees, partners & customers, virtualizing your organization .

SMS integration in e-business and e-commerce is a new approach in business. The possibilities and the benefits of adopting as another means of reaching out, to communicate and to enhance efficiency and cut costs are limited only by ones' imagination.
Here are few examples how a company or individuals get benefited with SMS application integration:
Notify customers via an SMS when a product on their 'wish-list' arrives
Update customers when their order is processed or shipped
Allow users to check if a product is available
Allow customers to request the status of an order
 Auto-alerts for new order enquiry
Remote control over your web based application or web site
Set event based triggers for sending SMS alerts (e.g. server outage, notification of an order, a fault, or when stock prices rise or fall to trigger an SMS)
Send SMS alerts to 3 rd party fulfillment house
Send status reports via SMS (value and number of orders, etc)
Text Messaging Requirements in US
It appears that due to privacy concerns, group messaging is under the FCC lens. If you wish to send group messages your organization will need to subscribe to a premium service called 'shortcodes' (or Short Service Number - SSN) from the cellular carrier, with the capability of users to reply - this would generally be applicable for mass messaging. It is yet unclear if carriers allow for broadcasting to employees without having to subscribe to shortcodes. In the event that such subscription is required, a cellular modem (generally a GSM modem) can be used to send and receive messages from your contacts.
